😱 Scientists at California Institute of Technology found that gut microbes from Parkinson’s patients could trigger key disease-related changes when introduced into mice predisposed to the condition. The animals developed worsening motor symptoms and abnormal accumulation of alpha-synuclein, a protein closely linked to Parkinson’s disease.
Even more intriguing, other studies from Caltech showed that abnormal alpha-synuclein aggregates originating in the gut can travel toward the brain through the vagus nerve-the major communication pathway connecting the digestive system and the brain. When this pathway is disrupted, the spread is significantly reduced.
Researchers now believe the gut-brain axis may play a much larger role in neurodegeneration than previously imagined.
⚡The implication?
Future Parkinson’s treatments may not focus only on the brain-they may also target the gut microbiome, inflammation, and gut-to-brain signaling pathways.
The idea that neurological disease could begin outside the brain is reshaping how scientists think about diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.
