For decades, Parkinson’s disease was viewed mainly as a disorder of the brain. But growing research suggests that part of the story may begin much deeper-in the gut.
Even more intriguing, other studies from Caltech showed that abnormal alpha-synuclein aggregates originating in the gut can travel toward the brain through the vagus nerve-the major communication pathway connecting the digestive system and the brain. When this pathway is disrupted, the spread is significantly reduced.
