Did You Know? Continuous Levodopa Can Reduce Dyskinesia Risk by Up to 90%!
Pulsatile dosing (taking levodopa 2-4 times a day) creates peaks and valleys in dopamine levels. This overstimulates dopamine receptors and rewires the brain in harmful ways, leading to dyskinesia over time.
The Evidence:
In a study by Lin & Laureno (2019), patients on a frequent dosing schedule (levodopa 6x/day from diagnosis) had a dyskinesia rate of just 5% after ~5 years.
Compare that to 50% in patients on conventional 3x/day dosing. That’s a 90% relative risk reduction.
Animal studies back this up:
In MPTP-lesioned monkeys and 6-OHDA rats, pulsatile levodopa caused severe dyskinesias.
Continuous infusion prevented or even reversed those changes.
