A Smart Brain Implant Could Change Parkinson’s Treatment!
A team of researchers has developed an innovative adaptive deep brain stimulation (aDBS) device capable of synchronizing with the patient’s gait in real time. In a clinical trial with five people with Parkinson’s disease, the technology improved walking stability and reduced falls compared to conventional stimulation.
The system, based on Medtronic’s experimental Summit RC+S neurostimulator, uses personalized brain signals to automatically adjust the therapy based on each step the patient takes.While larger studies are needed, the results show the enormous potential of this new generation of smart treatments to improve mobility and quality of life for people with Parkinson’s disease.
