Don’t apologize for your exhaustion.
If you live with Parkinson’s disease, there’s a good chance you’ve apologized for being tired more times than you can count.
“I’m sorry, I just don’t have the energy today.”
“I’m sorry I canceled.”
“I’m sorry I had to leave early.”
“I’m sorry I need to sit down.”
“I’m sorry I took another nap.”
After a while, those apologies become automatic.
But maybe they shouldn’t.
One of the biggest misconceptions about Parkinson’s is that it’s simply a movement disorder.
It isn’t.
For many of us, the exhaustion can be just as disabling as the tremor, stiffness, or slowness.
And here’s the frustrating part…
Parkinson’s fatigue doesn’t always make sense.
You can wake up after what seemed like a full night’s sleep and still feel like you haven’t rested at all.
You can spend twenty minutes running a simple errand and feel like you just finished a marathon.
You can have every intention of meeting friends, finishing a project, or cleaning the house…
…only to discover your body has reached its limit long before your mind has.
That’s one of the hardest parts.
Your mind still wants to live your life.
Your body simply can’t keep up.
People who haven’t experienced Parkinson’s fatigue often assume it’s the same as being sleepy.
