For many compounds, the human blood-brain barrier is impossible to penetrate. That is by design, as it is there to protect us. Only oxygen and a select few nutrients can pass through.
For decades, neuroscientists have been trying to find a way to access the blood-brain barrier so they can deliver drugs that can theoretically treat Parkinson’s and other neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s.
In a recent experiment, Spanish scientists used low-intensity focused ultrasound and managed to open blood-brain barriers for about 24 hours.
The result is a few millimeters of opening which allows drugs to be introduced in the desired area of the brain.
