Researchers led by Hiroshi Nishiwaki at Nagoya University, along with collaborators from Japan, China, Taiwan, Germany, and the U.S., have uncovered a compelling gut–brain connection in Parkinson’s disease. Analyzing fecal samples from 94 Parkinson’s patients and 73 healthy controls, they discovered a consistent reduction in gut bacteria involved in producing essential B vitamins—riboflavin (B2) and biotin (B7).
⚡ This deficiency seems to weaken the intestinal mucus layer and increase gut permeability, leading to inflammation and the formation of α-synuclein fibrils—a pathogenic hallmark in Parkinson’s. The promising takeaway?
Riboflavin and biotin supplements might help slow disease progression in patients with gut-specific microbial imbalances.
